Princess Marie hosts ten children in her home to teach them about food waste

Today, Princess Marie hosts ten children in her home of Klampenborg to teach them about food waste. Prince Henrik and Princess Athena joined her for the event.

The children were selected from Helsingor school and together with Princess Marie, TV Chef Timm Vladimir and Selina Juul, they cooked a menu established by Marie and Timm. They will cook a soup made of lean beetroot with potatoes, they will bake the garden apples in the oven and they use carrot peaks to make a pesto.

The aim of this event is to show these children how to cook with simple products and how to avoid food waste. These children are future consumers and Princess Marie is ” keen to make more consumers understand that the food is being thrown belongs to the dinner table and not in the bin.”

Selina Juul, founder of Stop Spild Af Mad, said  :“For the past ten years, we have helped Danes avoid food waste, so it is really positive and pleasing that HRH Princess Marie and the Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival are actively involved in the fight against food waste. It is especially important to teach children and young people who are future consumers to gain a greater respect for the food.”

You can see a video of the event here and here.

This event is the last of a string of events focusing on food waste from Princess Marie, continuing last year’s trend. This is clearly one of her most important causes right now and with the Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival, of which she is Patron, choosing food waste as their 2018 cause, I’m sure we can expect to see more of Princess Marie’s involvement with this cause and Stop Spild Af Mad in the coming months.

August 2018 will be the peak of the campaign for the fight against food waste for Princess Marie as she will open and visit the Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival ( which takes place from the 24th to September 2nd) and we can also expect her to attend the World Food Summit 2018 – Better Food For More People (on August 30th and 31st) as she is their Patron and she attended last year’s summit.

Here’s a look back at Princess Marie’s events linked with food waste :

In February 2016, Princess Marie opened Denmark’s first surplus supermarket WeFood as Patron of DanChurchAid.

In November 2016, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie attended a big charity gala dinner hosted by Stop Spild af Mad and Danish People’s Aid of which Joachim and Marie are both Patrons.

In August 2017 , Princess Marie became the official Patron of the World Food Summit- Better Food for More People. She had already attended the opening dinner of the 2016 Summit but she attended the full summit in 2017.

In November 2017, Princess Marie gave two interviews about food waste, one to a Brazilian TV Channel and one with a French TV Channel with Selina Juul.

For this fun but important event, Princess Marie wore a new sweater with a customized apron!

No more events were announced for Marie by the Court so far but I’m sure some will be announced later.

A huge thanks to Selina Juul for sharing information with me !

Princess Marie co-teaches French lesson at Vejen Gymnasium

Today, Princess Marie visited Vejen Gymnasium og HF in Vejen. She was there to co-teach a french lesson for two classes of students.

Before starting,  Princess Marie told the students : ” The only way to learn French is to talk, talk and talk, always.”

Princess Marie , the teacher and the students worked on the pronounciation of French words with games and Princess Marie had two prizes for the winners , a Royal Copenhagen mug and a pen.

At the end of the lesson, Princess Marie told the reporters : ” I have never tried to teach French this way. I am very impressed by the students’s ambition to learn the French language. French is a difficult but important language”.

Vejen Gymnasium tells me that the reason of her visit is to help increase interest in foreign language education in Denmark in general and in French specifically. Lars Amdisen Bossen, the headmaster , said : ” When the Queen got married with Prince Henrik, the interest in France increased. […] In 2004, French was the largest subject in language teaching in upper secondary schools.”

Clearly, the visit made a lasting impact on the students. One of them told jv.dk: “She was simply so helpful. I did not understand everything she said but it helped when she formulated it differently” while another said : ” It’s the first time I have been taught by a Princess. She is really sweet and totally down to earth.”

Princess Marie wore a new outfit today. Her coat is the Reversible Shearling Coat from Danish brand Utzon.

On January 4th, Princess Marie , as Patron of the Danish Emergency Management Agency and one of their special projects assistant, met with Dutch experts to learn about their initiatives to prevent fires and flooding and protect the population.

Since it was an unannounced event I don’t have any other details about the event. Marie wore her Isabel Marant jacket first worn in 2016.

Another important news for Princess Marie ! It was announced on January 3rd that Princess Marie had accepted to be an Honorary Member of the Association of the Dane of Horseshoe (Danish Galop) was founded in 1859 by Crown Prince , later King Christian IX. The tradition is that the Monarch is the Patron of the association. Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary and Prince Joachim already were honorary members and the association said they were delighted and honored to welcome Princess Marie.

They also announced that Princess Marie will attend a day at the Danish Galop Flagships in the Spring.

Today, Princess Marie is making her first official visit to Washington D.C ! She met with Andrew Steeler , the President and CEO of the World Resources Institutes to talk about the fight against food waste and how Denmark was involved in it.

Since the meetings were private , we don’t have any official photos but I reached out to the World Resources Institute for more information and here is what they told me :

” Denmark is well-known as a global leader in the field of sustainable development. WRI is therefore delighted to have the opportunity to host a visit by Minister of Food and Environment Esben Lunde Larsen, HRH Princess Marie, and Lars Bo Møller, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Danish Embassy in Washington. The Danish delegation will meet with WRI President and CEO Andrew Steer and WRI’s senior leadership to exchange ideas on how to address urgent global issues at the nexus of development, environment and human well-being that are the focus of WRI’s work: food, forests, water, energy, cities and climate. In addition, the minister will share Danish perspectives on such sustainable development challenges in an address and Q&A session with WRI staff.

The Danish delegation and WRI leadership will also discuss progress in a new initiative, Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals (P4G), led by a group of countries that includes Denmark, Chile, Ethiopia, Kenya, Korea, Mexico and Vietnam, along with leaders from business and international organizations. Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Prime Minister of Denmark, and other government leaders launched P4G at the UN General Assembly in New York last September. It aims to foster innovative public-private partnerships to accelerate progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). WRI hosts the P4G secretariat.
The World Resources Institute is a global think-and-do tank with more than 700 experts and other staff, half in Washington and half in international offices in the big emerging markets of the developing world: Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, and Mexico. WRI also has regional hub offices for engagement in Europe (in The Hague) and Africa (in Addis Ababa). WRI follows a three-fold approach to solving urgent global problems: Count It (research and analysis to define problems and identify solutions); Change It (close engagement with governments, businesses and civil society partners to implement, test and adjust solutions) and Scale It (fostering innovative global coalitions to reach tipping points where new and better approaches become the new normal).
WRI collaborated with Denmark in the creation of the Food Loss and Waste Protocol, the global standard for measuring and reducing food loss and waste. The protocol is now being adopted by leading food companies and governments to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which aims to cut food loss and waste by half by 2030. Currently about one quarter of the calories produced for human consumption are never eaten. Reducing food loss and waste can help to reduce the environmental footprint of food production and reduce global hunger. ” (NB: Selina Juul worked with the WRI on the Food Loss and Waste Protocol, she’s one of their Champions)

After the meetings, Princess Marie attended an official dinner at the Danish Embassy in Washington.

UPDATE: The Ministry of Food and Environment posted a photo of the Danish delegation !

The Minister Esben Lunde Larsen posted another one too! (Couldn’t help but notice that the lady next to Marie is wearing a Giorgio Armani jacket also owned by Marie!)

Princess Marie wore an UFO outfit first worn in November 2013 and what seems to be her favorite Sergio Rossi ankle boots first worn in 2016.

This visit ties nicely with an event Princess Marie will host on January 18th. She invited children to cook with her in her home at Klampenborg in order to teach them about food waste and how to avoid it. Princess Marie has worked closely with WeFood’s and Stop Spild af Mad’s founder Selina Juul over the years and I hear that great things are to come! You can learn more about Stop Spild af Mad here.

We’ll next see Princess Marie next Tuesday when she will visit Vejen Gymnasium to teach a French lesson with another teacher and next Thursday with the children in her home.

Review

2017 in review: how much did they work and how much did they spend ?

After yesterday’s first gala event of the year , it is time to look back on 2017.

© Kongehuset
During the whole year, with Sarah my fellow editor on Ufonomore, I kept a tally of the days worked by the member of the Danish Royal Family. It is the first year but I will definitely will continue to do that in 2018. In this tally, you can see the numbers of days worked (and not events) by each member of the royal family. Prince Henrik was in semi-retirement until the diagnosis of his dementia was made public this summer , this is why his numbers are at 0 for the following months. He will not be included in next year’s tally.  I was surprised by the Crown Prince couple’s numbers as I would have thought that Crown Prince Frederik, as the heir, would have worked more days than Crown Princess Mary.

While I don’t have my own numbers for 2016, Ekstra Bladet noted that Queen Margrethe worked more days while Crown Prince Frederik worked less days than in 2016 which can be seen as a sign that Queen Margrethe will not abdicate anytime soon according to experts. (You can see my thread about Ekstra Bladet’s numbers here – they’re different than mine even when excluding unannounced events and I’m not sure why. )

It is important to note that every member of the royal family works more than these numbers because there are countless hours of meetings and preparation behind each of these events and they are not on the calendar. Furthermore, both Prince Joachim and Princess Marie have day jobs. Prince Joachim works in the Armed Forces while Princess Marie is a special project assistant for the Danish Emergency Management Agency.

If you wish to see the numbers of days worked by the Swedish royal family, you can visit Sarah’s blog here.

In addition to the days worked tally, I kept a spending tally for both Crown Princess Mary and Princess Marie.

© Heaven LeeMiller/ UFO No More

Every new thing worn by the Princesses , whether on public events or private outings, were added to the tally. The numbers included are the prices of items debuted this year with a known (or estimated) price. The numbers excluded are custom made pieces without prices and UFOs. So it is important to take into account that the total numbers are actually higher because of the huge number of UFOs we have for both Princesses this year. However, the Princesses pay for their clothes privately.

What do you think about these numbers ? Are you surprised or were you expecting them ?

If you want to compare these spending with the other royal ladies, you can visit our blog Ufonomore where Brittani wrote a full post about the spendings of more than 10 royal ladies , here !

If you wish to use these numbers , please credit me and link back to the original post. For more information, please send me an email.

Gala Dinner

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie at New Year’s Gala Dinner !

Tonight , the first tiara event of the year took place at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. The gala takes place each year and the royal family as well as the Governement, the President of Parliament , representatives and members of the court attend. We took a look at Princess Marie’s outfits the previous years yesterday on Twitter and you can check it out here.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie arrived first at Amalienborg Palace. All the members of the Royal Family wore the necklace of the Order of the Elephant , the highest Danish order. You can see a video of the arrivals here.

Princess Marie wore the Rikke Gudnitz white and gold gown she first wore during the Belgian state visit in March last year.

She wore her Christian Dior shoes , first worn in 2014,  and her favorite New Year’s Gala clutch which is still UFO. Her earrings are new but the ring is old and UFO. I haven’t seen a good photo of the bracelet yet.
