As part of our 2018 Recap, let’s take a look at Princess Marie’s events for her main Patronages this year. Just click on the date to read each post about each event.
Compared to last year’s 4 events related to the Fondation she attended in 2017, Princess Marie only attended one event this year, the ceremony on World AIDS Day commemorating those who lost their lives to AIDS on December 1st.
On April 4th, Folkekirkens Noedjhaelp released a video of their Patron Princess Marie talking about their campaign against landmines.
On December 4th, Princess Marie attended the organization’s Christmas reception.
On April 23rd, Princess Marie attended the SIKON Conference hosted by the Danish Association for Autism.
On May 7th, Princess Marie visited Katrinebjergskole which is a model school for the Danish NEST program. The NEST program is established in New York and is based on the idea that children are more alike than different.
On June 22nd, Princess Marie visited two projects sponsored by the Danish Association for Autism.
On November 8th, Princess Marie attended the Scottish Autism 50th Anniversary Conference and the following dinner. This was one of my favorite posts to write this year!
Fight against food waste:
On April 10th, Princess Marie attended the launch of new teaching material to fight against food waste. She also took part in the launching video.
On August 9th, Princess Marie opened the new Too Good To Go store.
On August 24th, Princess Marie officially opened the Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival of which she is Patron. The Festival was focusing on food waste this year.
On August 27th, Princess Marie gave an interview to Aftenshowet to speak about the fight against food waste.
On August 30th, Princess Marie opened the Better Food for More People – World Food Summit 2018.
On September 16th, Princess Marie visited FoedevareBanken (the Danish Food Bank) to learn how the organization fights against food waste.
On November 13th, Princess Marie attended the Stop Wasting Food dinner. This dinner will become an annual tradition.
Danish Emergency Management Agency (DEMA):
Princess Marie is an honorary member of DEMA since 2011 and she works as a special project assistant since 2016 but she also attends public events for the organization.
On January 4th, Princess Marie met with Dutch experts to learn about their initiatives to prevent fires and flooding and protect the population.
On June 6th, Princess Marie attended a memorial ceremony to commemorate the 25th anniversary of an attack that took place in Maglaj, Bosnia-Herzegovina, killing two members of the Danish Emergency Management Agency and their local translator.
On June 12th and 13th, Princess Marie was in Scotland with a DEMA delegation to meet with Scottish Fire & Rescue teams.

On September 1st, Princess Marie attended DEMA’s Disaster Recovery Day in Naevsted.
On September 8th, Princess Marie attended Beredskabsforbundet’s national event.
On October 26th, Princess Marie attended a Fire & Rescue team training exercise at Copenhagen Airport.
Today, Princess Marie officially opened the Better Food for More People – World Food Summit 2018 at Christianborg Palace.
This is the third edition of the two-day Summit and the second with Princess Marie as Patron. The summit is hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark. The ‘Better Food for More People’ movement was combined with the World Food Summit.

Here is Princess Marie’s speech: ” Good morning ministers, CEO’s, chefs, journalists, food enthusiasts, ladies, and gentlemen.
Welcome to the 3rd edition of The World Food Summit – Better Food for More People.
It is a pleasure to be here, and it is a pleasure for me to see people from all around the world gathered here today.
It is a joyful occasion with the focus on a subject that is very dear to me: Food. But it is also a serious occasion. Because when it comes to both food consumption and production, we are facing enormous global challenges that call for global solutions.
Today, more than 800 million people live in hunger, while more than 2 billion people are overweight or obese.
This truly is the paradox of our time.
But our food is not only unequally distributed…
Every year, almost one-third of all food produced is either lost or wasted, and we have to stop that as well. Especially, since we live on a globe with limited resources.
As patron of this summit, I urge that we use this Summit to work together to address the global food challenges.
But first and foremost, every one of us must start by looking at our everyday lives and surroundings. We all have to be role models for our younger generation.
In my house, every now and then my children have to empty the fridge before buying new food. It means that I sometimes have to be a strict and unpopular parent – and I believe the best parents are!
We have to educate all our children to eat and consume food with modesty because science shows that it is during childhood that every person’s health and food habits are formed for the rest of their life.
We can all do a difference if we have the right tools, the knowledge, and the skills.
Therefore, we must work to ensure that all children are given the possibility to live a life with a healthy diet, with the ability to cook for themselves and the knowledge of the globes limitations.
I know that from where we stand today, this dream sounds less realistic than Denmark winning the World Cup in soccer. But nevertheless, it should be our aim.
I would like to end by thanking you all for coming here today.
By working together, we can create a joint movement and hopefully a sustainable world for the sake of our children.
A lot has to change if we are to ensure better food for more people.

After the opening ceremony, Princess Marie and the Minister of Food and Environment Jacob Ellemann-Jensen met students from the European School in Copenhagen and they ate the food homemade by the students. Afterward, Princess Marie and Jacob Ellemann-Jensen went back to the main room to take part in the next events of the summit.

Princess Marie wore a fully recycled outfit today. She wore her Giorgio Armani black blazer from 2015 (no stock photo but it has the name of the brand on the button) with her DKNY white wrap printed dress.
She paired the outfit with her Jimmy Choo ‘Romy’ black suede and her Carlend Copenhagen ‘Aicha’ black clutch.
We’ll next see Princess Marie on Saturday when she attends DEMA’s Preparedness Day.
As Patron of the 2018 World Food Summit – which she will officially open on Thursday- Princess Marie was a guest on Aftenshowet, Denmark’s biggest evening show, on Monday evening.
You can watch the twelve-minutes interview here. I tried to translate as much as I could based on the Danish subtitles (please credit me if you use the translation elsewhere).
Interviewer: Now I welcome Princess Marie! We must talk about the fight against food waste on the occasion of the World Food Summit in Copenhagen. You will give the opening speech , what is your main message ?
Marie: There are more than one message but one of the most important is that we can all make a difference if we have the right knowledge. It is important to teach our children and young people about healthy and good food. Another important message is that we need to think about our planet. Food waste is a waste of important resources that are already limited. The production of food costs a lot of the environment so we should at least eat it! Now in Denmark we became really aware of food waste and we are the pioneer country in this area. There are initiatives and organizations who are really involved in the fight against food waste. Danes and danish companies really want to focus on this.
I: So you are saying that we are well in our way but that there is still a lot to do. Statistics show that 700000 tons of food are thrown out annually in Denmark. When did you notice that this was a big problem in Denmark?
M: Unfortunately, it’s a problem throughout the western world. There are some terrible numbers. We produce and consume too much. We must address that.
I: We should see examples of your commitment

“A Princess with a passion. It’s the fight against food waste. It’s one matter that Princess Marie has been fighting for years. Princess Marie is the Patron of the World Food Summit.
It was the love of this man [Prince Joachim, a clip from the engagement announcement is shown] that bought the Princess to Denmark ten years ago.
In May 2008 took place the wedding of Princess Marie and Prince Joachim. In the years since her wedding , the Princess has been involved in this important cause. In 2014, she went to Ethiopia as Patron of DanChurchAid to focus on hunger and malnutrition. This year she received ten children from Helsingor in her own private home to have lunch off so-called surplus food. Moreover, the Princess takes part in openings of stores fighting to avoid food waste.’ ]
I: I will return to why your heart is close to this cause. That’s something you got from your childhood. But you are committed to a lot of causes like AIDS-Fondet, the Association for Epilepsy and DanChurchAid. When did it became important for you to engage in these topics that are also close to the Danes’s hearts ?
M: It was important to contribute to society and take on tasks which helped to lift Denmark and of course help people in need. Most importantly, I’m using my heart in what I do. That way, I am stronger. Fortunately, there are many people fighting for these causes in Denmark so you get inspired very quickly.
I: Do you feel that the Danes have had high expectations about your contribution ?
M: Yes, but they are reasonable expectations. I can use my position to raise awareness about important causes and thus make a difference so that’s a natural expectation from them.
I: Have you felt pressured by that ?
M: No, I feel like it is as a huge opportunity not as a requirement.
I: You said you could use your position to raise awareness about important causes. As a Princess, you are like a spoke-person but there is many causes to choose from but with food waste, it comes from your childhood right ?
M: It’s deep in me and food is a huge part of French culture – and of course also of the Danish culture- and although food waste is reduced , we still thrown away 700000 tons annually in Denmark like you said but there are 800 million people who are starving. These are terrible numbers and it is an important cause to support.
I: How was avoiding food waste in your childhood home ?
M: It was a natural development in my upbringing. We had great respect for food and I remember clearly the hunger disaster in Ethiopia in the 80s and the terrible pictures of the very thin children. I was very shocked and tried to never waste food.
I: Is it bad that consumers in our part of the world are wasting food while others are having a hard time and are starving ?
M: Yes, it’s the odd distribution of food in the world that I struggle to understand. We can all make a difference, it’s not that hard.
I: We can do that in very real ways in our own homes but is it also important for you to do it in your own home ?
M: Yes, it’s very important to me to teach my children about it. They are very curious and they want to contribute. They are proud when they do something good. They are very interested. It’s not a fight, it’s fun.
I: Do you actually help your children understand the perspective of doing something good in the world ?
M: They do not understand it all but they do understand that they are doing something good for the world. They listen to me telling them about my travels with DanChurchAid and about the children I met and they ask many questions so they end up understanding.
I: We have a few questions for you from the Danes because too many would like to do better in their everyday lives. Are you ready to answer a few questions ?
M: Of course.
1st question : With children in the house, I often end up with leftovers after dinner. What helps the Princess to make leftovers more exciting ?
M: That’s a good question, I’m not the best cook but I do my best. There are many different ways , for example to add cheese or use different spices like coriander, soy, lemon and ginger. Make it a little different. A new taste, a new dish!
I: That may be something that we need think about to give it a different taste!
M: Yes, adding spices do a lot!
I: It’s a simple and good trick! Do you bring your children into the kitchen?
M: Yes, I do ! They do not always bother but they like to be around. It’s also a great way to teach them about healthy foods and what to do if a vegetable isn’t entirely fresh , you can cut a part of it off for example.
I: Are you children willing to eat everything ?
M: Well, they try! It’s important that they try! I am not too strict but it’s important that they at least taste it.
I: Most parents may recognize that having children in the kitchen does something relative to the extent of they willingness to try.
M: Yes, it gets them more motivated.
I: We have another question.
2nd question: Do you also cut the remoulade off and use all the content of the fridge, and turn yoghurts around to avoid food waste?
M: Yes, almost everything in the fridge will be used up, we try to use everything. We also have a dog who likes to eat what’s left!
I: We have one more question.
3rd question: Does your Royal Highness have any tip to avoid food waste whether you’re single or a family?
M: It is important to think sensibly when shopping. One has to know what is already in their fridge, imagine meals and avoid impulsive purchases. You must also remember how many you are and not buy more than necessary. It is also possible to use smaller plates.
I: Does that work?
M: Yes,and I prefer to serve twice rather than throwing out. At least for the children.
I: Do you think a few meals in advance? So that you can use everything ?
M:We usually eat everything because I have very hungry children and a very hungry husband and we try to think sensibly.
I: Thank you for your answers! And all the best for the World Food Summit.

Yesterday, Princess Marie officially opened the Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival in Copenhagen.
This year’s edition marks the third year of the new CCFF. Indeed, this new version of the festival was created in 2016 when the original festival ‘Copenhagen Cooking’ decided to collaborate with the Food Organization of Denmark. Since Marie was Patron of Copenhagen Cooking since 2012, she became a Patron of the CCFF. This is the seventh time she visited the Festival (2011, 2012, 2014,2015,2016,2017).
The festival aims to promote Nordic gastronomy, especially Denmark’s. Around 100.000 visitors participate each year according to the festival. Princess Marie’s growing involvement with the festival makes sense since one of her main causes is fighting against food waste and promoting healthy cooking as well as Nordic gastronomy.
More about the CCFF: “Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival is an annual event which celebrates the culinary culture of Copenhagen as well as the whole of Denmark as a great food country. The festival is for everyone who loves food and hosts more than 100 unique events over 10 days at the end of August. Our official theme, ‘Breaking the New’, signals that the festival offers unique and different dining experiences and showcases the latest food trends. Every year some 80,000 festival-goers attend to celebrate Nordic cuisine, seasonal produce, and other great culinary experiences.”

“Many thanks for the invitation to participate in the opening of the Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival. As a Patron, I’m pleased this evening to declare the festival open.
I would like to thank Business Minister Rasmus Jarlov and Environment and Food Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen for their support.
I am pleased that the Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival this year has focused on the UN World Goal 12 on food waste, which is a matter that is very important to me personally.
I had the pleasure of promoting the fight against food waste myself with some amazing children in my own home back in January.
There I, together with chef Timm Vladimir, and the food savvy activist Selina Juul made a whole menu of surplus food together with 10 talented and dedicated children, all of whom had been a trip to the Arla Fund MadLejr.
So out of big beetroot, old bread, crushed potatoes and carrot stuff, we created a lunch, which we all had, including my own two children, to eat.
Worldwide, one-third of all food is wasted.
The waste takes place both on the ground, in production and in households.
Global food waste amounts to 1.3 billion tonnes a year and is enough to feed 3 billion people!
So it’s incredibly important that we get better and more aware of what we’re throwing out.
Every Dane throws almost 50 kg of edible food out a year. And that’s too much.
But fortunately, most Danes have now become more aware that it is both expensive for the money and for the environment.
And there are many good initiatives and organizations that will help solve the problem.
I hope that, as Danes, we can work towards the goal of the World Goal; namely a halving of the food waste in 2030.
And now we are here, ready for this year’s program. With over 100 unique events and industry activities in front of us. Over 10 days filled with delicious food, exciting discussions, and new experiences.
All of you who stand here have contributed in one way or another to this year’s festival. I would like to thank you for that. I hope that you will enjoy the evening in this beautiful setting, and not least enjoy the dinner that will be a taste of what the Copenhagen Cooking & Food Festival will offer.

Princess Marie wore her teal leopard print shirt dress from Charlotte Sparre. She first wore this dress back in 2016.
She paired this dress with her black Carlend Copenhagen croc clutch and black patent leather pumps. I haven’t seen a good photo of them so I can’t say whether they are new or not. She also wore her Christine Hvelplund ring, reportedly a gift from Prince Joachim.
